Why the bridge changed
We had a version that worked technically. Every note was where it should be. We played it for three weeks before realising it didn't feel like anything. The version that survived came from a mistake in rehearsal that we kept. The mistake was more honest than the plan.
On the lyric that stayed
Twenty-two versions of the opening line. The one that made it through was the fourth draft, abandoned for six weeks, returned to by accident. Some things don't get better with effort. They get better with distance.
The rehearsal that broke everything open
There's a moment when something stops being a song you're practicing and starts being something you're inside. We had that moment on a Tuesday. It doesn't happen often. When it does, you write down what you were doing.
Endurance"continuing past the point where meaning ran out"
Transformation"the person who began this is not who will finish it"
Discovery"I found it by not looking"
The people who were there from the beginning.
